Telephones

Interview with Brian, Marty, Linda and Charlie

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Brian: YOU can use the phones when ever you were not locked up in your cell . You had to dial collect to call someone at home.
Marty: Yes, but if you made a collect call you only got 20sec on that call.
Linda: only when not locked in
Charlie: yes

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Brian: You had to call collect to call people at home.
Marty: None, unless you buy a phone card from commissary (that is like a store)
Linda: you could only make collect calls
Charlie: collect call charges

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Brian: No, you did not have to buy cards. You had to call collect when calling home
Marty: If you wanted more than 20sec? yea
Linda: you can now not when i was there
Charlie: no

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Brian: There was a recording on there that said that they recorded calls etc.
Marty: Every single call that goes out!
Linda: yes
Charlie: dont know, if they did there would have been a good reason im sure.

the 3rd party PCS phone system has an online acctyou can establish at http://www.securustech.net or you can establish a pin by calling 1-800-844-6591. The number the ACJ provides is not helpful.

I have called 1-888-288-9879 to see why the inmate's pin number is not working and no help whatsoever. The inmate was able to use it only one time and it worked, but that was more than a week ago. Also he had filled out a paper every day stating the problem. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thank you!

Until now the only way to use the phone system was to call collect or establish an account, which you put increments of $50 on it with the numbers you wish to access. Two things about this is that it can only be set up and administered by someone on the outside and when you call someone, they still have to accept the call, although there are no charges.
GOOD NEWS, the jail is implementing a calling card system that inmates will be able to buy unique calling cards on commissary (DO NOT SEND CALLING CARDS), only the ones on commissary at the jail will work and inmates will be allowed to call people without having a predefined calling list, but recipiants of these calls will still have to accept them and people can block their number from being called from the jail to avoid any more nusance. So, put money on their books and let them get a calling card. Price effectiveness is best with this new card.

I have Comcast for my home phone service. I am unable to receive the collect calls though. Is there something I should do to be allowed to except the inmates calls? Thanks, Shelly

i have comcast, but was told i had to go to the website www.correctionalbillingservices.com and open an account and put money on it then your line would be clear. The minimum you could put on was $50.00 ($6.95service charge. i learned the hard way by purchasing a $50.00 prepaid visa...had to go get a $100.00)
